Using Video to Observe Teaching

Using video of science lessons and student interviews, participants in Pearson Achievement Solutions Science modules visit experienced teachers' classrooms and practice looking at science teaching and student learning through the science content and student thinking lenses.

These lenses will shift participants' focus as teachers from the lesson activities and the performance of the observed teacher to the issues that really matter: the students' thinking and the content that they are trying to understand. Analysis of video examples will enable participants to see what it looks like when student thinking and science content are made visible in science lessons, and they will also learn to recognize when lessons do not accomplish these goals.

The ultimate goal is to help participants become reflective teachers who know how to examine their own teaching in ways that will lead to continuous improvement of student understanding of science. As they move through the various tasks in the course, they will reflect on their progress in understanding the value and how to use the student thinking and science content lenses on science teaching. Participants will think about how they can use these lenses as they plan, teach and assess science learning in their own classrooms.
