What Is Pearson Achievement Solutions Science?

Pearson Achievement Solutions Science is a collection of innovative professional development modules for science teachers in grades 2-8. Currently under development in collaboration with Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), these modules will help teachers draw coherent connections between classroom content and activities to larger conceptual ideas about science with their students.

The ultimate goal of science teaching is to help students understand how science explains the world around us and how scientific explanations are developed. Upon taking Pearson Achievement Solutions Science modules, science teachers will increase their science content knowledge on a conceptual level.

These modules teach participants to select and use activities and explanations carefully, in ways that accurately represent scientific concepts and in ways that reveal, challenge, and shape students' personal ideas about how the world works. Participants will become better at helping students develop more scientific, evidence-based explanations and ways of knowing.

Pearson Achievement Solutions Science modules will help teachers develop a way of thinking about their teaching that will enable them to make wise decisions about which activities to include in science lessons and how to best connect those activities to the science content being taught. This way of thinking involves looking at lessons and student work through two lenses: a student thinking lens and a science content lens.

Each module will employ the Pearson Achievement Solutions approach to professional learning and growth which comprises two primary phases: Content Exploration and Lesson Analysis. In the Content Exploration phase, participants explore the scientific concepts, build their content understanding, and study the teaching and learning issues related to each of these core concepts. In the Lesson Analysis phase, participants learn how to think critically about instructional practice by studying a lesson plan developed around the topic, watching that lesson plan executed in an actual classroom via video, and collaborate with peers and an expert facilitator to analyze the lesson.
