The Pearson Achievement Solutions Approach to Professional Learning and Growth

The Pearson Achievement Solutions approach to professional learning and growth comprises two primary phases: Content Exploration and Lesson Analysis.

Content Exploration: Developing pedagogical content knowledge in science
Teachers of science are often limited by their own understanding of science. Although most teachers know scientific definitions, and can carry out common science activities, many do not have the deep understanding of science that is required to help students move beyond their own preconceptions. Research defines "pedagogical content knowledge" as teachers studying and understanding subject matter in ways that enable its use in teaching. This knowledge is specific, concrete, and linked to practice and what teachers are expected to teach-blending science content with the knowledge of how to represent and formulate science to make it comprehensible to their students.

Pearson Achievement Solutions Science modules will work to build pedagogical content knowledge by focusing teachers on content learning embedded in classroom settings. Teachers will be guided to examine student thinking in lessons as well as to make connections between science activities and the content being taught.

Lesson Analysis: Developing the ability to analyze classroom lessons
When teachers first observe science teaching, their focus is most often on the teaching and management strategies used by the teacher. They do not typically attend to what students are thinking or how the content is being represented. Without guidance about how to analyze a classroom lesson, teachers tend to focus on what the teacher is doing without reference to its effect on student learning.

Pearson Achievement Solutions Science modules will help teachers develop lesson analysis skills to more skillfully "see" the subject matter in lessons, discriminate ways that learners comprehend subject matter, identify problematic features, assess student responses, and develop instructional responses to student errors.
