The Foundations of Reading

Course Description
This course looks at the foundations and methods of reading instruction. In this course, participants 1) examine the "process of reading," 2) learn methods of reading instruction and comprehension building, and 3) learn strategies to foster students' emergent literacy and promote vocabulary development. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • When and how does a child begin to learn to read?
  • How can teachers help a child's emergent literacy?
  • What competencies are necessary for comprehension of reading materials?
  • How can teachers help students develop their comprehension skills?
  • What is the link between reading and writing?
Course Features and Materials
This course features video with classroom teaching and expert commentary, graduate-level texts, participant forums to promote in-depth discussion, and an application-based approach to assignments to ensure transfer of learning.
