Reading in the Content Areas

Course Description
In this course, participants 1) learn methods to improve comprehension and vocabulary development 2) learn strategies to improve content area reading, and 3) adapt literacy assessment techniques to content area reading. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • How is content area literacy and literacy in the reading classroom alike and different?
  • How can teachers help students read content area texts effectively?
  • How can teachers help students develop research and writing skills critical in the content areas?
  • What are effective assessment techniques for content area literacy?
  • How can technology be used both to develop literacy and learn content?
Course Features and Materials
This course features video with classroom teaching and expert commentary, graduate-level texts, participant forums to promote in-depth discussion, and an application-based approach to assignments to ensure transfer of learning.
