Hands-On/Minds-On Science in the Middle School Classroom
Course Description
In this course, participants learn strategies to teach science concepts and skills in the
middle school classroom. Participants explore science standards and benchmarks, science
concepts and processes, how students learn science, effective science teaching strategies,
science activities and investigations, and assessment methods, and learn the skills and
methods necessary for creating practical and effective science lessons. Core questions
addressed in the course include:
- How can learning theories be used to create an optimum learning
environment?
- How can teachers plan and implement discovery based hands-on
lessons in the classroom?
- What techniques can help create minds-on learning with hands-on
activities?
- What are some techniques for crossing the curriculum with
science?
- How can teachers incorporate Internet resources appropriately
in the classroom?
