Teaching Strategies to Increase Math Achievement in Middle School Classrooms

Course Description
The course promotes that curriculum is more than a collection of activities; it must be coherent, focused on problem solving, and articulated across grade levels. The course is aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, which promote that students must learn mathematics with understanding and teachers must help students see the importance and relevance of mathematics in everyday life. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • How should new mathematical concepts be introduced in the middle school classroom?
  • What can teachers of mathematics do to ensure that their teaching is aligned with standards?
  • How can a teacher help students to see the importance and relevance of mathematics in every day life?
Course Features and Materials
This course features video with classroom teaching and expert commentary, graduate-level texts, participant forums to promote in-depth discussion, and an application-based approach to assignments to ensure transfer of learning.
