Teaching English and Language Arts to Second Language Learners

Course Description
The course begins by looking at the theoretical foundations of language development and language acquisition, then examines instructional and assessment strategies such as CALLA and Sheltered English. Core questions addressed in the course include:

How have second language acquisition theories impacted classroom instruction?
What are some classroom strategies that promote oral language development?
What are some strategies to promote reading comprehension?
How are peer response groups used for process writing?
What are some classroom strategies for improving second language writing?
How is an informal reading inventory (IRI) administered?
What are the preferred measures of assessment for English language learners?
