Teaching Strategies to Increase Math Achievement in the Elementary School Classroom

Course Description
In this course, participants learn the skills to help children learn mathematical concepts and skills, including problem solving skills. The first part of the course is an overview of learning theory as a foundation for understanding the mathematics curriculum and how children learn math. The second part introduces teaching strategies for computational procedures in whole number, fractions and decimals, and the final section focuses on investigation and process skills of mathematics. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • How should new concepts be introduced in the classroom?
  • How should problem solving be approached in the classroom?
  • How should the mathematics be made meaningful, interesting and fun in the classroom?
  • How should the math curriculum be aligned with standards?
Course Features and Materials
