Cultural Diversity
Course Description
As our country has become increasingly diverse, educators and policy makers have become aware
of the need to provide equitable, culturally-appropriate education for all. The goal of this
course is to give teachers a broad overview of the impact of cultural diversity in the
classroom and ways to provide a fair and equitable education to diverse learners. Core
questions addressed in the course include:
- What are the characteristics, variables, and components of
culture and what implications do they have for the classroom?
- What is the relationship between language and culture?
- How can teachers better meet the needs of English language
learners in the classroom?
- What is the historical, theoretic, and ideological framework
behind multicultural education?
- How can teachers create culturally sensitive classrooms?
- How can teachers use brain-compatible learning, multiple
intelligences, problem-based learning, cooperative learning, and inquiry-based learning to
foster instruction that meets diverse needs in your classroom setting?
