Course Description
This course demonstrates how to integrate traditional tests with portfolios, performance-based evaluations, and other authentic assessments. Participants are introduced to the major research and work in educational assessment, measurement, and student evaluation. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • What is the role of standards and standardized testing in assessment?
  • How can teachers and schools effectively report students' grades and progress to parents?
  • Why are performance tasks and performance assessments necessary for assessing students' abilities?
  • How can rubrics be constructed and used to inform and assess student performance?
  • What is the role of portfolios in a balanced assessment program?
  • How can teachers manage and implement portfolio systems?
  • In what ways should students be involved in the design of the evaluation tools?
  • How can balanced assessment be communicated to concerned parents?
  • What role does celebration of student work have in assessment?
