Children's Literature in the Elementary Classroom

Course Description
This course focuses on integrating literature into the elementary classroom. Notable authors and illustrators are highlighted, and award-winning literature is provided for consideration. Core questions addressed in the course include:

What are the characteristics of good children's literature? What criteria should you use to select quality books for your classroom?
How can teachers select literature that reflects student' interests, student' reading levels, and the goals of the curriculum?
What are the different genres of children's literature and how should they be incorporated in your reading program?
What strategies are effective for implementing a literature-based approach to reading?
How can authentic literature support or replace the reading basal?
How can you build a classroom library?
How should teachers evaluate children's reading ability?
