Children's Literature in the Elementary Classroom

Course Description
This course focuses on integrating literature into the elementary classroom. Notable authors and illustrators are highlighted, and award-winning literature is provided for consideration. Core questions addressed in the course include:
  • What are the characteristics of good children's literature? What criteria should you use to select quality books for your classroom?
  • How can teachers select literature that reflects student' interests, student' reading levels, and the goals of the curriculum?
  • What are the different genres of children's literature and how should they be incorporated in your reading program?
  • What strategies are effective for implementing a literature-based approach to reading?
  • How can authentic literature support or replace the reading basal?
  • How can you build a classroom library?
  • How should teachers evaluate children's reading ability?
