Brain-Compatible Strategies for Teaching Mathematics

Course Description
In this course, participants explore brain research as it relates to mathematics instruction and student learning. Participants review theories related to brain research, learn the connections between authentic performance tasks and assessment tools, brain research and major instruction, and develop a "toolkit" of instructional strategies and lessons in mathematics that incorporate brain-compatible learning principles and practices. Core questions included in this course include:
  • What is the connection between brain "compatible" and performance-based?
  • How does knowing how the brain works help teachers in structuring learning?
  • How can teachers create lessons that are performance-based and brain-compatible?
Course Features and Materials
This course features video with classroom teaching and expert commentary, graduate-level texts, participant forums to promote in-depth discussion, and an application-based approach to assignments to ensure transfer of learning.
