BGSU (Bowling Green State University) Leading Effort to Improve Teaching of Math (BreakThrough Mathematics)
January 18, 2005
By Kim Bates
In February, professors at Bowling Green State University will serve as a test lab in Ohio when they begin a new type of training for area mathematics teachers. LessonLab in California created the pilot project, known as BreakThrough Mathematics. Initially, up to 100 teachers, K-12, will participate from Lucas and Wood counties.
Spearheading the project is Barbara Moses, a math and statistics professor at BGSU. She said the course is unique in the state and is funded by a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education. She said results gathered from the work would be shared across Ohio.
Teachers who participate will receive two graduate credit hours to satisfy their state teaching requirements. The fee is $150. For teachers who do not need the credits, the course is free.
Tina Hurd, vice president of marketing for LessonLab, said Bowling Green is part of a major national launch for the new effort. She said some of the most important aspects of the program are that it's facilitated and also presented in a way that should allow it to have immediate impact in the classroom.
